Job Summary:
Van-Kam Freightways Ltd. is looking for a highly motivated and organized individual to join our team as a full-time Operations Supervisor out of our Surrey terminal. The successful candidate will be responsible for aiding in Warehouse Operations at our terminal. This role will play a key role in ensuring the efficient and effective movement of freight while meeting operational goals and contributing to a positive working environment and culture. This position will report directly to the Dock Manager. The shift for this position is from Sunday to Thursday (Sunday 6am-4:30pm, Monday-Thurs 2pm-12:30am)

Van-Kam Freightways Ltd (Van Kam) is one of the largest regional carriers in Western Canada specializing in less-than-truckload (LTL) transportation. With 8 terminal locations across British Columbia, we fulfill shipments to communities within 1-3 days throughout BC and Alberta. Between our own resources and our partner network, our coverage extends beyond Western Canada into the U.S. and Eastern Canada.

Responsibilities:
  • Supervision & Leadership
    • Lead and supervise dock workers and shunt drivers
    • Provide guidance, training, and support to meet performance expectations.
    • Set and communicate performance expectations, conduct evaluations, and address issues including tracking and managing employee attendance.
    • Promote engagement with company values.
 
  • Operational Efficiency
    • Coordinate and prioritize loading and unloading freight to optimize efficiency.
    • Monitor workflow to ensure trailers close on time and communicate any delays.
    • Ensure priority and overnight freight is offloaded and sent as planned, addressing any issues.
    • Implement strategies to improve operational efficiency.
    • Complete and submit daily shift reports.
    • Use heated trailers on specific lanes when necessary.
 
  • Safety Compliance
    • Conduct regular shift briefings on safety topics and operations updates.
    • Investigate and report safety incidents, implementing corrective actions.
    • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies.
    • Handle DG shipments according to Transport Canada and company policy.
    • Participate in OH&S committees and monthly inspections.
    • Ensure safe and damage-free loading and securement within trailers.
 
  • Problem Solving
    • Identify operational challenges and implement solutions.
    • Collaborate with stakeholders to resolve issues promptly.
    • Foster a problem-solving mindset within the team.
    • Address customer concerns and inquiries professionally.
 
  • Training & Development
    • Identify training needs and coordinate sessions for the team.
    • Support continuous learning and skill development for dock workers.
    • Promote a culture of continuous improvement.
 
  • Ad-Hoc Duties
    • Handle freight with care to maintain customer satisfaction.
    • Maintain a positive, team-oriented attitude.
    • Assist the Claims department as needed.
    • Coordinate trailer movement in the yard to dock doors.
    • Other duties as required


Required Qualifications:

  Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and compliance requirements in the transportation industry.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work flexible hours to cover AM and PM vacations.
  • Regular shifts for this position are 10-hour days / 50-hour work weeks.

  Training and Experience:
  • A minimum of 5 years of warehouse management experience is required.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications and the ability to navigate technology efficiently is required,
  • Transportation experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • AS400 experience is preferred.
